The Future of Brooklyn School
At the Tuesday April 27th Board meeting the Board of School Trustees unanimously voted to re-unite the Brooklyn community in one campus. Please know that this motion is only the first step in a very long process and does not signal that Brooklyn Elementary will close or that our population will be moved to the Cape Lazo site. The Board will move ahead to examine the legally correct process to re-open Cape Lazo School and then will enact policy to once again initiate closure processes for both Cape Lazo Middle School and Brooklyn Elementary. Closure process require a series of meetings that bring forward issues, look at enrolments, school configurations, facility needs, costs associated with each scenario etc. Of course to do this will require a re-examination of the entire Comox zone and not our school in isolation from the district as a whole.
We would expect that this process will get underway early in the Fall of 2010. Stay tuned for meeting announcements and updates. Your voices will continue to be needed as we explore together the future of our school community.
